What Is Lichen Sclerosus?

Lichen sclerosis is a rare condition that features the appearance of patchy white skin, typically around the genital area. Lichen sclerosus is not an infection and is not contagious. The most common symptom is intense itching, although some people report burning, stinging, and pain. A simple office biopsy using an injectable local anesthetic can make the diagnosis.

Is Lichen Sclerosus a Serious Concern?

Lichen sclerosus is generally not a serious condition, however, it can progress to a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. More commonly, lichen sclerosus causes intense discomfort, making sexual relations painful and non-enjoyable. This can have serious ramifications on relationships.

What Are the Treatment Options for Lichen Sclerosus?

The most common and successful treatment is the consistent application of topical steroid creams and ointments. These can be combined with topical hormone creams, and are very effective. Some women have advanced disease, and for these women, additional treatments such as laser and/or stem cells may be indicated. Here at Horizons Health & Wellness, we offer the MonaLisa Touch® Vaginal Laser for the treatment of this condition. The MonaLisa Touch® works by delivering gentle laser energy to the external genital tissue. This process stimulates a healing response, encouraging your body to generate new collagen, elastin, and vascularization. This results in new vulvar tissue formation with more moisture, more elasticity (stretchiness), more thickness, and more resistance to infections. This treatment is non-invasive and can give you effective relief from your symptoms.
